Focus on LAW

Sharon O. Jacobs concentrates her practice in the areas of environmental law and administrative law. Ms. Jacobs has administrative, environmental and litigation experience at the federal, state and local levels as well as with administrative agencies. This experience includes matters associated with Brownfields redevelopment, leaking underground storage tanks, water pollution, hazardous waste, solid waste, Superfund, and air pollution, while working closely with state and federal regulators on regulatory compliance issues and associated litigation.

Before joining the firm, Ms. Jacobs served as an Assistant Attorney General for the Tennessee Attorney General and Reporter, Environmental Division. As an Assistant Attorney General, Ms. Jacobs set precedent in establishing a State Department's authority pursuant to the Uniform Administrative Procedures Act in Fentress County Utility District v. Tennessee Water Quality Control Board. She also served as Assistant General Counsel for the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation and as a Special Assistant Attorney General for the Tennessee Attorney General and Reporter, Criminal Division.  In 2009, Governor Phil Bredesen appointed Ms. Jacobs to the Tennessee Petroleum Underground Storage Tank Board, which is responsible for the governance of petroleum underground storage tanks in Tennessee. 

Ms. Jacobs co-authored West Publishing's Medical Waste Handbook, 1999 and 2000 Editions. She has presented seminars on environmental topics for the Tennessee Bar Association and for various businesses. While in private practice, Ms. Jacobs has litigated before state administrative law boards, in addition to working with Tennessee State agencies, Davidson County agencies and various other county agencies throughout Tennessee.

Ms. Jacobs has been admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court, the Tennessee Supreme Court, the United States District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee and the United States District Court for the Western District of Michigan. She is a member of the Nashville Bar Association (Environmental Law Committee, Vice Chair 1997 and Chair 1998); the Tennessee Bar Association (Environmental Law Section, Vice Chair 2000-2001 and Chair 2001- 2002), the Lawyers’ Association for Women, the Missouri Bar Association and the American Bar Association. Ms. Jacobs serves on the board for Gilda's Club of Nashville. She is also admitted to practice law in Missouri. Ms. Jacobs has been named to BusinessTN magazine's "150 Best Lawyers" each year since 2008, for her expertise in Environmental Law, and was also selected for the 2009 edition of Mid-South Super Lawyers.  In 2003 and 2004, Ms. Jacobs' peers in the Nashville legal community named her to the Nashville Business Journal's "Best of the Bar."

Ms. Jacobs received her Bachelor of Arts in 1984 from the University of Georgia and her Juris Doctor in 1990 from the University of Missouri School of Law.
