The George Jones Museum opens with a red carpet private event tonight and opens to the public tomorrow.

Also launching this weekend is White Lightning Moonshine, which pays tribute to the song that became his first Billboard hit in 1959.

"It’s been great working with Nancy Jones on this project,” Herndon said. “We are so excited for the grand opening of the George Jones Museum and allowing others to have a glimpse into a life that helped shape so much of country music.”

Family Wash, 12th & Porter Among Music Venues Evolving to Stay Alive

Today’s Tennessean features Family Wash and 12th & Porter, two Bonelaw clients, in a cover story about Nashville music venues adapting and changing in order to stay afloat. While most of Music City is under construction with additions and renovations, a growing concern exists among residents that the city’s legacy and character will be lost with the new changes. These venue owners, though, believe growth is a good thing, if done correctly.

Family Wash, which opened in 2002 in a former laundromat in East Nashville, closed Feb. 21. It will reopen in late spring/early summer in a space three times bigger that includes more seating, standing room space and new audio/visual recording and streaming capabilities. Read more about the plans here.

12th & Porter, a venue known for hosting showcases of superstars like Keith Urban and Kings of Leon, closed Feb. 28 and will reopen under new ownership May 1. Infinity Restaurant Group has a renewed focus on the food they will serve and plans to create a spot where people can regularly go to be entertained. Read more about the plans here.

Bone McAllester Norton’s Alcoholic Beverage Law practice provides licensing and regulatory compliance to both venues.

Head of Jesse James America’s Outlaw Beer Speaks out against Definition of Tennessee Whiskey

Multi-platinum-record-selling musician and head of Jesse James America’s Outlaw Beer, Jesse James Dupree, wrote an op-ed that appeared in Monday’s Tennessean regarding the ongoing debate over the definition of Tennessee whiskey. The battle recently flared up in the Tennessee state legislature, as distillers and lawmakers disagree about whether “Tennessee whiskey” should be defined by a recipe known as the Lincoln County method. Dupree’s plans to break ground for a Jesse James Distillery are on hold until a resolution can be made, and he contends this issue is a way of keeping up-and-coming distilleries from taking over market share.

Bone McAllester Norton’s Alcoholic Beverage Law team represents Dupree and his friend Michael Ballard, owner of Full Throttle S’loonshine.

Franchise Times Features Gigi’s Cupcakes’ Gina Butler

Bonelaw client Gina Butler, who started the Gigi’s Cupcakes brand, is on the cover of the January issue of Franchise Times. The story details Gina’s rise to fame, which includes baked goods instead of country music, and one she made happen with just $33 in her pocket. The California-raised daughter of a farmer moved to Nashville to pursue a career singing country music in the mid-1990s and soon found herself waitressing at Red Lobster and cleaning houses as she worked Music Row. Frustrated that her singing career was not taking off, it was a call from her brother—and a call from a higher power—that led Gina to open her cupcake business. Now, seven years and more than 100 locations later, she is about to see her first international store open (in South Korea) and see herself on an episode of CBS’ Undercover Boss.

Attorney William T. Cheek III had this to say about Gina, his client: “I am so proud to see Gina work so hard to accomplish the American Dream and become a success.”

Forbes Features Ole Smoky Moonshine

Bonelaw’s Alcoholic Beverage Law client Ole Smoky Distillery was a recent feature in Forbes. Contributor Amy Guttman spoke with Joe Baker, partner in the distillery, about the explosion that company has experienced in the last five years. When state law made it legal to commercially produce “white whiskey,” or “moonshine,” Baker and his partners were the first to apply for a license. As former criminal defense lawyers, they knew the law but not much about distilling or the alcohol business.

Needless to say, they figured it out, and within the first year of operation, the trio saw a 300 percent growth rate. They now employ 200 people and are one of the main attractions in East Tennessee’s Gatlinburg. Recently, they expanded internationally and into chain restaurants like Outback Steakhouse.

New & Bigger Turnip Truck Market Slated for East Nashville

John Dyke, founder of the Turnip Truck markets, talked with the Tennessean about his plans for a new, bigger store in East Nashville, set to open next summer. The natural market at 705 Woodland St. will feature a larger selection of local groceries and produce, juice bar, hot food bar, salad bar, baked goods, meat and seafood departments and beer and wine. With the community support Turnip Truck has received, Dyke said moving to a larger location is necessary and will offer shoppers a better, more enhanced experience. A seating area will overlook the store and neighboring East Park.

Distillers Battle over Tennessee Whiskey Definition

The Tennessean featured an article over the heated debate about a state law defining what “Tennessee Whiskey” is. Several Bonelaw clients are featured in the news, including Diageo, Nelson’s Greenbrier, Full Throttle, Corsair and Pritchard’s. The argument centers around how whiskey should be made—bourbon filtered through sugar-maple charcoal before it is sealed in new, charred, white oak barrels before it is aged.  Some distillers support a state law that strictly defines Tennessee Whiskey, but others want the flexibility to use their own recipes to make Tennessee Whiskey.

Read more about the debate here.  We are excited to see the passion about distilling in Tennessee.

Green Brier Distillery Revived after a Century

Yesterday’s Tennessean included a feature on Andy and Charlie Nelson, heirs of Charles Nelson, whose Green Brier Distillery in Robertson County outsold Jack Daniel’s in the late 1800s. It closed in 1909, but the Nelson brothers, after releasing Belle Meade Bourbon last year, have revived one of their grandfather’s stills, combining history with new technology and forensics. The first house-made brand of whiskey is being pulled off the still now and will drip through sugar maple charcoal before being stored in charred white oak barrels.

The new Nelson’s Green Brier Distillery is open in Marathon Village, 1414 Clinton Street. Tours and tastings are offered hourly throughout the week.

Bonelaw’s Alcoholic Beverage Law practice provides the licensing the distillery.

Tennessean Features 3 Bonelaw Clients

Three Bone McAllester Norton clients are prominently featured in this week’s “Music City Beat” section of The Tennessean. “Music to All Ears” covers the wide range of music genres now available to visitors in downtown Nashville, thanks to places like Acme Feed & Seed. The historic building at First and Broadway has been turned into a four-floor restaurant, bar and live music venue—and the music offerings vary from bluegrass and folk to Americana and “funky tonk,” the term Acme’s music booker termed.

Just a few blocks away, tucked away from the Lower Broadway scene on Lafayette Street, is the newly opened City Winery. This restaurant and venue is the fourth location for the brand, with other spots in New York City, Chicago and Napa, Calif. It pairs a wine-focused menu and an intimate space with a diverse concert calendar. Artists who have already played there include Macy Gray, Rodney Crowell and Dr. Ralph Stanley.

“Union Common Offers Opulent, Uncommon Dining Experience” reviews Bonelaw client Union Common, the boutique steakhouse that recently opened at the Broadway-Division split in Nashville. The menu boasts more than 20 small plates and several larger plates that feature seafood, steaks and pork chops. Everything served is meant to be shared, including bottles of wine, desserts, plates and sides.
