Legal Aid Society Honors Charles W. Bone as First Recipient of its Gallatin Community Award

GALLATIN, Tenn., May 13, 2015—Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands, Tennessee’s largest non-profit law firm, has awarded the first ever Gallatin Community Award to Charles W. Bone, founder and chairman of Bone McAllester Norton PLLC. The award was announced Tuesday evening during a reception at the Gallatin Public Library.

Members of Legal Aid Society’s Gallatin office – which serves Macon, Smith, Sumner, Trousdale and Wilson counties – selected Bone as Legal Aid Society’s first-ever community award recipient because he has championed the non-profit law firm in the community and his firm has been a financial and pro bono supporter to Legal Aid Society’s Gallatin office as well as its Nashville office.

The Legal Aid Society Community Awards Program was created to honor individuals in the community for their leadership and compassion in supporting Legal Aid Society’s mission. During the award presentation, Bone was honored with a silver tray and praised for his many years of commitment to community service.

“The impact of Legal Aid Society would be a fraction of what it is without the strong network of community support we’ve received from people like Charles, who has become a real community advocate for our work,” said Steve Christopher, managing attorney of Legal Aid Society’s Gallatin office. “He truly cares for the wellbeing of this community, and he and his firm have been invaluable resources in helping us seek justice for so many people in our service area. He was instrumental in getting a legal aid office in Gallatin in 1977 and continues to help us keep this office open.”

Bone is the founder and chairman of Bone McAllester Norton PLLC. His experience covers many industries and areas of law, including business formation, mergers and acquisitions, capital creation, joint ventures, financial institutions, media law and government relations. Throughout his career, Bone has served in leadership positions for both public and private companies and financial institutions. He was County Attorney for Sumner County, Tennessee, for more than 20 years, and he served as counsel to the Independent Bankers of Tennessee. In 2009, Bone served as Legal Aid Society’s annual campaign chair. He presently serves as General Counsel to the Tennessee Municipal Bond Fund and chairs the United Way of Sumner County campaign chair.

“I’m humbled and overwhelmed by this honor,” Bone said. “It can be so easy for members of the Bar to take for granted the real value of justice in our communities. But when you have the opportunity to work alongside an organization like Legal Aid Society that so valiantly demonstrates the impact of fairness through the law, justice is honored in its greatest sense.”

Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands advocates for fairness and justice under the law. The non-profit law firm offers free civil legal representation, educational programs and advice to ensure people in its region are able to protect their livelihoods, their health and their families. It serves 48 counties from offices in Clarksville, Columbia, Cookeville, Gallatin, Murfreesboro, Nashville, Oak Ridge and Tullahoma. Legal Aid Society is funded in part by United Way. News Release

Monday – January 19, 2015

NASHVILLE – Today, Nashville law firm Bone McAllester Norton PLLC hosted its 14th annual Fellowship Breakfast honoring the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Honoring Yesterday, Securing Tomorrow: Dr. King’s Legacy 2015.

“We’re honored to have so many in our community come out this morning and celebrate with us the life and work of Dr. King,” said Charles W. Bone, founder and chairman of the law firm. “It’s important to remember and to embrace Dr. King’s message, especially at a time of recent tensions.”

This year’s event included a special tribute to the late John Seigenthaler, and more than 500 people were in attendance this morning. A panel discussion focused on how Dr. King’s message is relative to us today. Stacey Garrett, chair of the board of directors at Bone McAllester Norton, moderated the discussion.

Panelist Bishop Joseph W. Walker III referenced Nashville being called the “It City,” but he said, “There are some pockets of our city that have yet to feel the ‘it.’”

He continued, “It’s about giving people opportunities to transform.” He said we have to address it in multiple areas of economics, education and mentoring.

“Every generation has challenges,” said Kasar Abdulla, Director of Community Relations, Valor Collegiate Academy, “and it’s how we approach these challenges that matters.”

“It takes courage,” Kasar added.

The conversation concluded with thoughts and comments from those in the audience.

Also on the program were members of the top-ranked KIPP Academy Nashville Choir, who gave an inspiring performance during the breakfast.

KIPP Academy is a charter school, and the Nashville performance choir has garnered local, regional and national acclaim, regularly winning exemplary status at local and regional festivals and has twice been selected to highlight student performances at the annual KIPP School Summit Gala.

The panelists included:
